Okay. Damon on River first because that will be a little easier at this juncture.

River is... interesting. Damon is a fan of interesting things (largely because when he gets bored, people die) and River is by far one of the more interesting he's seen in Taxon. He's still trying to figure out her deal, but whatever it is he's intrigued.

TVD isn't up on psychics (yet) and Damon's not really a ~plotter~ by nature anyway so it's not like he wants to use her or anything, but he's kind of like TINY AND MIGHT HELP ME GET RABBITS DRUNK, OKAY. :>

I feel that between the two of them, River will be the one plotting and possibly using him if it ever came to a point that such action was necessary. As it is she will reserve all plotting skills for their trolling escapades.

Both those things must happen. Possibly at the same time.

TINY TROLL → TINY TROLL

So, the show is called Buffy the Vampire Slayer and not Dawn the Vampire Slayer's Little Sister, so obviously we see more of Buffy's relationships than Dawn's. However, from what we do see it's pretty clear that (in Sunnydale, at least) Dawn doesn't have a ton of friends her own age. (Janice, who ditches her; season seven she makes ~new friends~ who disappear after like one ep sob; the Potentials are more of an invading horde than potential bffs, for the most part.) Some of this can be chalked up to just not concentrating on Dawn, but a lot of it is: Dawn spends a metric fuckton of time with people Buffy's age and older. She's had to grow up fast, and beyond that LOL I'M A TROLL, LOOK AT ME WITH MY TROLLING she's actually concerned with a lot of issues that are... probably not healthy for someone her age to pile on.

She's also the perpetual little sister, always younger and protected and not treated like she's stupid but definitely just. Fragile, needing more of a shield. She's always been the taken care-ee, never the caretaker. River is an equal and Dawn thinks of her as one, but she's also protective of River in a way that unconsciously apes some of the Buffy → Dawn vibe, with Dawn as the Buffy in this situation. That's definitely new for her, but in a good way.

Also, River has moved past Dawn's usual LOL ADOPTED EXTENDED FAMILY thing into that 'part of me' place previously only occupied by Buffy.

Dawn → Godric

Dawn loves Godric, in her weird 'adopting random people because lol abandonment issues' way. She's slowly realizing that just because he doesn't scare her doesn't mean he is, in fact, not scary. It probably helps she's used to scary as a baseline, because despite seeing a tiny fraction of what he's capable of she still totally adores him. (His treatment of River is part of this; somehow along the way, Dawn has slotted River into her normally only Buffy-held slot of 'part of me' and therefore Godric basically gets all the points in the world for not treating River like a child or a piece of broken glass.)

She also trusts him to help keep her safe because... lol well. She's the Girl Most Likely to Be Kidnapped, and last time Godric and River saved her from Angelus so she trusts they could do it again.

Damon → Godric

So, okay. Damon does not actually know a whole lot about himself, vampire speaking. From what we can tell of TVD vamps they are kind of... territorial might be a good way to put it? And not terribly organized in the LOL WE HAVE A RULING BODY sense of the word, especially out of the Old Country. (...Countries.) Damon was turned without knowing really wtf was up, abandoned by his sire and kind of left to fend for himself, after Stefan pulled his vegan 180. The stuff he knows about vampires is through personal trial and error, community legends and most likely what he could weasel out of other vampires.

...And you know, he's a giant douchebag troll so the avenues of information open to Stefan were closed to him since no one wants to help out that dude who won't quit insulting you or put his pants back on. Godric's age (when/if he gets a better read on that) might actually give Damon pause for a moment, because in their canon the folks Godric's age are called the Originals and they are super fucking scary.

Faith → Godric

OKAY THIS IS THE COMPLICATED ONE. Godric is a source of comfort and stability at the same moment he scares the living daylights out of her. Faith's experiences with romance are... dismal. She's never had a ~real boyfriend~ in the adult sense (guys she slept with in Boston do not count, because the relationships you have at fifteen are not the same you have later in life, lol) until Robin. She trusted him, gave him a chance and he dumped her ass flat, heaping more trust issues on the already ginormous pile.

Her relationship with authority figures is equally shitty; first Watcher, murdered in front of her and Faith still blames herself for it. Giles (who she actually respects and likes, in her way) will always always always out Buffy above her. Her dad was an abusive murderer and her mom was a neglectful junkie. The Mayor was... healthy in the most unhealthy ways possible, but he died on her. And Angel is Angel which is another ball of fucked up.

The point is: Faith doesn't really have stability. Or constant, positive attention. Angel comes close, but their relationship is weird with the (usually) unspoken attraction, and the way that Faith is actually kiiiiind of more an equal with him, especially given their Angelus-fueled history. Godric is something else; he's basically all her needs in one. (Violent sex, attention, daddy figure and layer down of the law.) The power structure with Angel can be somewhat shifty, but with Godric Faith is secure in her place on the food chain, so to speak. This, in her fucked up 'lol I actually hide a deep longing for authority and structure under all this swagger' way, makes him feel safe for her. (Because she's messed up.)

Faith doesn't really do attachments because she's terrified of being rejected and thus hurt yet again; however, Godric has managed to sneak past all her barriers to the point where in some hypothetical fest of horrors if it came down between saving Godric and Angel, she'd hesitate. She'd pick Angel and then try and drink herself into a grief coma, but she'd hesitate. And given that Angel is basically at the very top of her (short) People I Give a Shit About list that's huge.

On the shallow end she likes that she can't really hurt Godric; the sex is amazing and she doesn't have to hold back. (Plus, lol biting kink.) He's basically everything she actually kind of needed in a person but never in a million years would have let herself go for outside of Taxon.
