Speaking of AUs: I am blaming Dien and her tumblr for this.

That time Josef was a longcoat.

There were some in the guard that did so out of fear, feeling that being closer to the empress would keep them safe. Others stood by Azkadellia because of their loyalty to the land of the Outer Zone, though they didn't care who ruled the land. No one was there because of their loyalty to Lavender Eyes.

Two were there because of what the empress allowed them to do, the violence she encouraged within them. One was now the head of the guard due to the death of his predecessor, a man he had subtly pushed and prodded into dying as so many others had. It had been murder in more than one way, Josef was sure of that.

Now to do the same to Zero and take his place as Azkadellia's right hand.

"So how is the missus," he asked Zero, standing behind him as he looked out over the city from the highest point. "Found someone to replace you yet?"

Zero snorted, rolling his eyes. "That was only the one time."

"So you say," he chuckled, moving with the softest creak of leather. Of course, just the once compared to all your own times..."

Moving to Zero's left, constantly moving in case the man chose to swing. "Does she know about you and the empress? Of course, I mean, not as if that is a unique situation."

He spoke low, a dark rumble, planting bugs in Zero's ear to keep him off balance, both physically and emotionally. Mental was off balance for years.

"You know what I think," he said suddenly. "I think tonight, while you're seeing whatever mistress you've moved on to? I think I'll visit your missus," he said with a laugh just as Zero turned, swinging. he caught Josef hard in the jaw just as Azkadellia and the remaining guard walked in.

"If you two can't behave, I will see you dead," she snapped, smiling sweetly at the pair of them.

"She means you," Josef cooed, slipping past Zero to join the others.

Oh yes. With enough time, with enough planning, he would have his position yet.
